Organic Chemistry
Used as a cyclising agent in the synthesis of aziridine, oxadiazole, isoxazole, and pyrazoles, and as a source of nitrogen anions and electrophilic cations.
Disinfectant
It is a widely used disinfectant due to its ability to kill bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. It releases chlorine, which has a slow and lasting bactericidal effect and can also dissolve necrotic tissue.
Analytical Chemistry
In medical settings, it is used as an oxidising agent in certain diagnostic procedures, particularly in protein and peptide analysis.
