It's a naturally occurring substance found in some fruits and vegetables, and it plays a role in various biological processes. Malonic acid is also used in industrial applications, including the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, flavouring agents, and fragrances.

Frequent Uses

Chemical Synthesis
Used in the production of specialty polyesters, alkyd resins (used in coatings), and other high-value chemicals. It's a component in low-temperature cure powder coatings, which are used to protect against UV damage, oxidation, and corrosion. 

Pharmaceutical
It is a building block for synthesising various pharmaceutical compounds, including barbiturates (a class of sedative-hypnotic drugs). Also a precursor in the production of certain vitamins, like vitamin B1, vitamin B6, and vitamin B2.
