  • Used as a precursor to trimethylolethane through a condensation reaction with formaldehyde.
  • Can be reduced to form propanol.
  • Can be oxidised to form propionic acid.

What is Propionaldehyde? Also known as propanal, it is a three-carbon, colourless, flammable liquid with a strong, fruity odour, used as a chemical intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals, plastics, and flavourings. Its chemical formula is C₃H₆O, and it has a low flash point, meaning it ignites easily. It is a significant industrial chemical and a naturally occurring metabolite.

Consistent Quality: We source only high-quality Propionaldehyde ensuring reliable performance in any application.

Shipped from Manchester, UK Facility: Sourced and bottled in secure, chemical-resistant containers to guarantee safe handling and transport.

Frequent Uses

Redox Reactions
Oxidising propionaldehyde yields propionic acid, which is used as a preservative. Reduction of propionaldehyde produces n-propanol, a solvent.

Plastic Production
It is a crucial precursor for trimethylolethane, an intermediate in the production of alkyd resins for plastics.

Flavours and Fragrances
Used in the synthesis of certain aroma compounds and found as a natural component in some food flavourings.

Rubber Production
Utilised in the synthesis of chemicals for the rubber industry.
